VRE Broth
Enrichment medium for detection of Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococci (VRE)

Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) represent a serious challenge in clinical microbiology and infection control. Resistance is mediated by the van genes (vanA, vanB, vanC), which can be plasmid-borne or chromosomally encoded. The rapid identification of VRE carriers is crucial to prevent spread in healthcare facilities.

Method Principle

  • Inoculate the broth with the sample.

  • Incubate at 35 ± 2 °C for 24–48 h.

  • Positive result: Turbidity and blackening of the medium.

  • Subculture for complete identification.

VRE Broth (Liofilchem®) is a selective enrichment medium designed for the screening, isolation, and cultivation of vancomycin-resistant enterococci.

  • Contains vancomycin to inhibit susceptible organisms.

  • Selective components (aesculin, bile, azide) support the growth and differentiation of enterococci.

  • Aesculin hydrolysis produces a black color reaction in positive cases.

  • Sensitive: Detects VRE carriers with low bacterial concentrations

  • Fast: Growth and color change visible after 24–48 h incubation at 35 °C

  • Simple: Ready-to-use tubes, easy to handle in routine labs

  • Specific: Inhibits Gram-negative bacteria and vancomycin-susceptible enterococci
